This steel vehicle bridge crosses the Merrimack river in northeastern Massachusetts. The deck was assembled from six FRP spans including one swing span, creating a bridge measuring 809 feet long, with widths varying from 21.25 feet to 25.3 feet. The deck is 7 inches deep, and the total area of the deck surface is 17,776 square feet.
The products used in this installation were FRP bridge deck panels, attached to a steel truss on longitudinal beams using welded shear studs and grout. The surface of the bridge deck was coated with polymer concrete.
Use of FRP for this project allowed the contractors to meet their aggressive construction schedule by installing premade deck sections, and reduced the dead load due to FRP’s light weight.
Using FRP allowed railing posts, expansion joints, access platform supports, and manhole covers to be pre-installed on the deck panels, further reducing installation time and costs.
